Hi Everyone ~
I am so excited to tell you that my Rag Purse it done!!!!!!! YEAH!
I am really happy with the way it turned out.
As you remember I still needed to create the handles and closure for it and then attach them.
First I cut 2 pieces that measured 2-1/2" x 24" of fabric and 2 pieces that measured 1/2" x 24" of cotton batting.
Take your 2 strips of fabric and iron them in half (lengthwise), then open them up and fold in each side to the center about 1/4 inch and iron that. See photo below.
Once each strip is done – lay one cotton batting strip in each.
You can pin this closed (I did not pin it) then sew down the whole strip on each side in about 1/8". So you are sewing down the 24" side – sew it closed on the one side and just down the folded side. This creates your handles for your purse.
Next you want to cut a strip of fabric that measures 2" x 12" for your closure piece.
As with the handles fold in half and then 1/4 in on each side and iron it. Sew up each 12" side same as you did on the handles. I am sorry I don't have a picture of this but it is exactly the same as the handles above except that you don't add the cotton batting.
Once you sew up both sides – fold this piece in half and form a "V". See the close up of the front of the purse so you know what I mean. I know I like I am a visual person – I like to see what I am suppose to do.
Once you do that sew the tip of the "V" and then about 1/4" below that. Again see the close up photo for a look at what I am saying.
Once you have all three pieces completed it is time to insert them into the purse and then permanently stitch them in.
I started with the handles and inserted them into the two outside squares and lifted the batting in the square and inserted the handle behind the batting. Pin in place. Making sure your handle is centered in the square on each side.
Insert your closure piece into the center square on one side and pin in place. It is at this point that you want to decide which side you want to be the front of your purse. That matters when you place your closure strip in.
Once you have it the 2 handles and closure strip pinned in stitch all along the top leaving a 1/4" seam.
Once your you have stitched the entire top pull out your pins. Your purse is almost done! You now need to take small sharp scissors and go along all the seams and snip in almost to your stitch lines. I snipped about 1/4" apart. You really need to use a small scissor and note that it takes a while to do all the snipping.
After all the snipping is done – you will need to wash you purse on a gentle cycle in your washing machine. I also tumbled dried it in my dryer.
YOUR PURSE IS COMPLETE!!
I really liked the way it turned out!
Oh I almost forgot – you need to have a matching button that you can sew on to the front. I sewed the button on by hand.
